Real world skill set and the mindset of
a business owner
My work history hasn’t been a linear path. At 21 I was bartending, but by 26 I was the operations manager at a small manufacturing company in Boston and shipping product from China back before that was a thing. Computers landed on work desks around that time and I learned how to use the programs from the guys who were designing them in next door Cambridge. Back in Portland I worked in mental health and medical records, then IT support for Blue Cross downtown. I loved to temp, so whenever I was between jobs I could drop into a new company and soak up everything I could. Those experiences made starting my own businesses easier, and made my “job vacations” running for public office and running the political campaigns of others possible. Podcasts, photography, community management, and hosting online events during Covid added to my skill set, as did online classes in marketing and project management. Now all of these things are coming together in a new way.
Being a solo small business owner all of these years has made me realize what a lonely endeavor it is. While friends and family can offer advice, they aren’t really in it with you. Sometimes you just need someone to help you make a plan, give you a high five for a small win, or be your accountability partner when you haven’t done the thing you were supposed to do. I want to be that sounding board and cheerleader with a big dose of real world technical knowledge to make you feel less alone.
